8 Morning Rituals for Creating the Life You Most Want

Each day is brand new. Our cycle of sleep is like a reboot button for our entire body and mind. The morning time symbolically represents a time of rebirth and renewal according to the teachings of yoga and Ayurveda. These first few hours of the day set the tone for the entire rest of our day. Our first daily actions set our energy in motion in the direction of where we want to go.

Do you want to have a peaceful and grounded day? Or, a joyful and connected day? What is it that you’d like to bring into the world through your life?

Unfortunately, far too many of us set ourselves up for a day of stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. We do this by waking up and immediately checking our social media and email. Or, by rushing through breakfast, getting ready, and commuting to just barely get to work on time. The morning is spent rushed and in a state of stress, rather than relaxed and with time to connect to yourself and your intention at the start of the new day.

The morning time is a sacred time of day to set intention and proclaim what it is you’d like to bring into your life on that given day. When you incorporate more ritual and routine into your daily life, your entire life will benefit and become more purposeful. Not only will you support a regulated nervous system state, you will also replenish your energy, balance your hormones, and feel healthier, happier, and more grounded.

There are many ways to add ritual into your morning routine. Some of my favorites are:

  • Wake up with the sunrise Give yourself an hour or two of time before you need to leave the house, if possible.

  • Leave your phone off or on airplane mode for the first 2-hours of the day. Avoid checking your email or social media until you feel you are in a grounded and stable place. Sometimes, even having our phones in the same room as us can be very distracting, so you may consider finding a safe, hidden place to put your phone in the morning to keep it from distracting you. This could be a closet or a drawer, really whatever works.

  • Start your day with gratitude - for the earth, the sun for rising, your body for waking you, and all of the other things that are right and good in your world. Do this before you even get out of bed.

  • Drink a glass of warm lemon water. You could add a ¼ teaspoon of Himalayan sea salt to help rehydrate your tissues, or some fresh ginger to help give your digestive system a boost.

  • Meditate for 5-20 minutes to refresh and ground your mind.

  • Journal on your intention for the day. What is it you’d like this day to be like? What are you hoping to create? This could be as simple as a single word that you’d like to focus on for the day.

  • Move your body! This could be a yoga sequence, going on a walk, dancing, or really whatever ways you like to move. When we move in the morning time, we lift some of the stagnation of sleep out of our system, balance our stress hormones, and gift our mood a lift.

  • Eat a light and healthy breakfast, with little to no distractions. No phone, no TV, no radio. Enjoy your food, really savor and taste every bite. Eat slow and with gratitude.
