What is a yoga therapy session like?

What is yoga therapy?

Prior to your first session, you will complete an intake questionnaire. Our first session will last 90 minutes, and will include further intake and an in-depth discussion of your goals.

After our initial assessment, we will create a treatment plan to support your healing journey. This includes individualized tools and processes for restoring balance in your body and mind. The treatment plan will include practices to take home and integrate into your daily schedule.

The following techniques may be used, dependent upon your individualized plan:

  • Functional movement therapy and postural assessment to reduce physical pain and improve nerve function

  • Yoga postures and somatic exercises to process stress and trauma in the body

  • Meditation, affirmation, and breathing practices to soothe and settle the mind

  • Self-massage to reduce physical pain and ground the nervous system

  • Ayurveda & lifestyle changes to support hormonal balance, body function, longevity and health of the nervous system

  • Life coaching to help identify goals and take meaningful steps toward achieving them

  • Deep relaxation practices that activate your body's ability to heal and integrate

Yoga Therapy does not replace your doctor’s advice. However, yoga therapy is complimentary to Western medical practices. If you are working with any medical diagnosis, please inform me prior to our session.

What is yoga therapy for anxiety? How does yoga therapy help?

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga has been recognized as therapeutic for centuries. So what makes yoga therapy any different? Is yoga therapy is a form of physical or psychological therapy, or perhaps some kind of spiritual mentorship and yoga-based life coaching?

A yoga therapist incorporates aspects of all of these, and utilizes them to achieve unique, individualized goals. It recognizes health and well-being as an integration of body, mind, and spirit.

Yoga therapy is a revolutionary, personalized, and medical approach to yoga. Rather than catering your body to a set sequence being taught by the class instructor, a yoga therapist completely customizes a class around your specific needs, whether that is structural, physiological, emotional, mental, or spiritual. In most cases, it is a combination of all the above. Your personalized practice may include any tools from the yoga tradition that resonate, some of which may be: asana, yoga nidra, meditation, pranayama, mantra, mudra, Ayurveda, and so on.

A certified yoga therapist, as apposed to a 200-hour yoga instructor, has trained for 1000+ hours to be fully skilled in working in medical settings with many diverse populations and needs. Yoga therapy combines the wealth of knowledge from a tradition that is thousands of years old with modern science, all the while facilitating the discovery of your own intuitive knowing concerning what your body wants and needs to live fully.

Yoga therapy has been used for years to help with conditions such as hypertension, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. There is an ever increasing amount of research and scientific proof that yoga can help individuals achieve health and wellness goals of all kinds. Yoga therapy is an alternative healing modality that can work in conjunction with Western medicine, bridging yoga with healthcare.
